Genre-Bending Science-Fiction Crime Novel Makes Way to Amazon

CHEYENNE, WY – May 1, 2020 – Near future crime thriller penned by Carl H. Mitchell, Sundown: Engineering Gives the Devil a Sunburn, draws us into an amazing world which explores the social constructs of humanity and the science and technology that coexist alongside crime fiction.

Hailed by Kirkus Reviews as, “A beefy police procedural with well-developed sci-fi and espionage touches.”

The story follows the year 2057, when the world is starved of oil and the whole globe is in the unrelenting grip of the World Council. The story closes into the world of NYCPD detective Nick Garvey who has his plate murderously full, contending with: the assassination of the Vice President and four Secret Service agents; the vicious power struggle between President Lenora Allison and the Supreme Leader of the World Council, Jason Beck; the off-duty avenging of the brutalization of his estranged daughter by her live-in thug; the kidnapping of his granddaughter when he gets too close to the truth about Jason Beck’s world-domination dirty tricks; and his confrontation with President Lenora Allison which leads to their joint setup in front of a firing squad.

Over time on the force, Garvey has seen it all and knows his survival depends on his well-oiled instincts. An incredibly dark, yet interesting narrative centered around complex unsympathetic characters.

In his radio interview with CBS’s Benjie Cole, the radio deejay believes that Mitchell made a connection to the reader in this fictional novel with realistic circumstances. The big underlying message in this book is the prevalence of unity, teamwork, and overcoming adversity. Watch a video rendition of the radio interview uploaded onto YouTube:

Mitchell’s hero named Garvey makes for a bolder, more energetic protagonist and an unstoppable force that you will never find elsewhere.

About the Author:

Carl H. Mitchell developed a penchant for writing at a young age. His first serious read, at about nine years of age, was Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Isaac Asimov’s The End of Eternity, and Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea completed the capture. Born in California, raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and in Lake Worth, Florida, he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. He worked at IBM for 35 years as an engineer, programmer, and manager.

Carl lives with his wife, Maryann, in Hillsborough, New Jersey, with winters spent in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Along with downhill skiing, he counts among his hobbies the keeping of koi, of which he currently owns more than a hundred. Auditing a year’s worth of bills for fish food and pond maintenance has led to the more accurate conclusion that the koi own him.

Carl has written several short stories. Sundown: Engineering Gives the Devil a Sunburn, published by Covenant Books, is his first novel — a near-future police procedural with thriller, mystery, espionage, and dystopian aspects. There are also Science Fiction touches. He writes to entertain and challenge his readers.
