May 8, 2020 – One man keeps proving that age is just a number when it comes to making good music. That man is Garry Manuel. The 69-year-old just keeps going after many years of success, as evidenced by his two new hit ballads.
Produced under Sunflare Songs and Records, the songs ‘Romantic Knots’ and ‘Words Won’t Do’ are Garry’s compositions and show his unwavering prowess as a songwriter, guitarist, as well as vocals, and production. In fact, Garry has a promising album on the way, of which his son, Marshall Westlake Manuel is the recording engineer and co-producer. ‘Romantic Knots’ and ‘Words Won’t Do’ were also recorded by Marshall, with the wonderful electric bass tracks laid down by Charles Bianchi.
During Garry’s early college years, he came together with childhood friend James Wilson to form a group called Sunup. They started out as a guitar/vocal, songwriting duo, before adding a bass player. Garry led the group and wrote the most material they recorded. They performed at colleges, clubs, and coffee houses, as well as opening shows for major recording acts, such as Jackson Browne, Jimmy Cliff, the James Gang, and others. Garry featured former Sunup keyboardist, Brian Soule on the instrumental piece ‘Words Won’t Do’; a piece he wrote for his wife.
Garry Manuel has not slowed down over the years and is not showing signs of doing so. In a recent interview, he was asked about his motivation to keep going at this age. He said, “If Tony Bennett and David Crosby (among others), can still be growing in their musicality and turning out great performances in their 70’s and 80’s, there is no reason I can’t be on that same path. After all, it’s the music that speaks!”
Garry’s musical influences are vast and diverse, seeping into the songs he has written and continues to write. You may hear one song that could be a mainstream country hit and the next, could border on jazz. There are songs that have great verses with memorable hooks and others that are more folk-like in nature, with an emphasis on lyric content that tells a story and the acoustic guitar work. His songwriting ranges from romantic ballads to uplifting pop songs and occasionally ventures into addressing the political currents of the times.
