Nurses from all over the world call for a #HealthyRecovery from Coronavirus

May 29 17:39 2020
Representing India, Canada, UK, USA, Botswana and Zimbabwe, they took to Youtube to deliver a powerful message; calling leaders to put health first as we move forward after the pandemic.

They called on nursing colleagues to join them on social media and grow a grassroots conversation around the neglected issue of planetary health.

Whilst working hard to battle Coronavirus in their own communities, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (AHNE) have today released a video statement, featuring nurses from four continents, relating to the Healthy Recovery campaign.

Professor Sheila Tlou, Co-chair of Nursing Now and former Minister for Health of Botswana, who featured in the video, said;

“We have seen floods, earthquakes, even now, new epidemics of Ebola, SARS, HIV and AIDS, MERS and now the Covid19 epidemic. These are all interchangeable and all together, and it’s really showing that the earth is one. We need to protect it or we will be the ones who suffer the consequences.”

Nurse Jessica Madrid, President of the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment said:

“What we’ve seen now in terms of people coming together, I think is unprecedented. If only we could come together like that on other issues that concern our health and our wellness, it would be amazing the impact that it could have on our society.”

Munashe Nyika, a board member of Nursing Now, from Harare, Zimbabwe said:

“Human health and planetary health are linked and are one. If our planet is not healthy, we cannot continue to be healthy ourselves”

The Executive Director of ANHE, Katie Huffling said:

“We can address climate change in a way that’s going to make a healthier planet and healthier people, and that’s going to bring a strong economy going forward. It doesn’t have to be an either or proposition.”

“We have just celebrated the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, and even back then she recognized that having a clean environment, clean air, clean water, helped people to heal and helped them stay healthier. Planetary health is just an extension of that.”

The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments are asking their colleagues to use the #HealthyRecovery hashtag in keeping with the wider campaign, visible at https://healthyrecovery.net
