More Than a Place to Live: Why Community Connection Matters in Retirement
Residents and team members gather outside Sundial Lakeview Retirement & Residences in Orillia, demonstrating the importance of friendship, community involvement and social connection in retirement living.

ORILLIA, Ontario – A retirement residence should provide more than comfortable accommodation. It should offer friendship, activity, purpose and a genuine connection to the surrounding community.

Social isolation can affect mature adults for many reasons. Retirement from work, the loss of a spouse, transportation difficulties and reduced contact with friends can gradually make someone’s world feel smaller. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, approximately 1.1 million mature Canadians are experiencing loneliness. Social isolation and loneliness can affect mental health, physical health and overall quality of life.

“People need more than a safe place to live. They need to feel seen, included and valued,” says Dr. Cynthia McQueen. “A strong retirement community creates daily opportunities for conversation, movement, friendship and purpose.”

At Sundial Lakeview Retirement & Residences in Orillia, community connection is an important part of supporting independence. Shared meals, recreational programs, celebrations, exercise, entertainment and informal conversations give residents opportunities to build meaningful relationships while choosing how involved they want to be.

Community outreach is also important. Retirement communities should not be separated from the cities and neighbourhoods around them. Local events, charitable initiatives, volunteering and relationships with community organizations can give mature adults opportunities to remain engaged and continue contributing their knowledge and experience.

Connection does not mean giving up privacy. Residents can enjoy their own private space and decide when they want to participate. The objective is to make companionship and activity readily available without taking away personal choice.

“Retirement means independent living,” says Dr. McQueen. “Independence is stronger when people have access to good food, enjoyable activities, supportive relationships and a community that cares about them.”

Families considering retirement living should look beyond the physical building. They should ask about activities, dining, community involvement and how a residence helps new residents build friendships. The right environment should feel like a home within a larger community.

Sundial Lakeview’s commitment is “Supporting Your Independence.” That commitment includes helping residents remain active, connected and involved in the Orillia community.
